Founded in 1961, the Dolores Water Conservancy District manages the Dolores Project in the Dolores and San Juan River basins in southwestern Colorado. It helps in developing water for irrigation, municipal and industrial users, recreation, and fish and wildlife. The district also provides water for hydroelectric power. It maintains the McPhee Dam and Reservoir, which includes a system of canals, tunnels and laterals to deliver water to more than 60,000 acres of land. The Dolores Water Conservancy District also offers recreational opportunities, such as boating, rafting, fishing and hiking. The district is located in Cortez, Colo.
