Founded on January 5, 2007, Long Island Spirits was the 100th distillery in the country at the time. It was also the first distillery on the Island since the 1800s. Star Wines & Liquors was established in 1993, and is owned and operated by "The Two Alans," Alan Short and Alan Glass. They met when they were dating their respective wives, Suzanne and Beth, who have been friends since grade school. As their friendship grew, so did their shared interest in wine. Many weekends were spent tasting and enjoying wines from around the world. As time went on, their fantasy of owning a retail wine shop became a reality. The first location of Star Wines & Liquors, a 2,500 sq. ft. store in the Stop & Shop Plaza in Monroe was quickly outgrown. After 2 years, the store moved to a 5,000 sq. ft. location in the same plaza. As the community grew, so did Star Wines & Liquors. Another move was in order and in November of 2002, Star Wines & Liquors proudly unveiled its new 10,000 sq. ft. store, which is one of the largest discount liquor stores in the U.S.
