Founded in Raleigh in 1967, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals ( SPCA ) of Wake County is dedicated to creating a more humane community where every adoptable animal has a home. Each year the SPCA rehomes over 3, 000 animals through its innovative adoption programs and lost and found efforts! The guiding mission statement of the SPCA remains as relevant now as it was when it was written in 1967: To protect, shelter and promote the adoption of homeless animals ; to provide education about responsible pet ownership and to reduce pet overpopulation through spay/neuter programs. The SPCA of Wake County operates two animal shelters and each facility serves a different purpose. The first facility is SPCA Curtis Dail Pet Adoption Center located at 200 Petfinder Lane in Raleigh, which focuses on pet adoption and public education. The Adoption Center location does not accept any incoming animals. The second facility operated by SPCA is SPCA Lost & Found Pet Center at 327 Highway 70 East in Garner. At this location, the SPCA accepts incoming animals from residents of Raleigh and Cary or animals found within these areas. This limited intake policy is to keep the SPCA shelter from overflowing ( and thus putting more animals at risk ) by sharing these duties with the government-run Wake County Animal Shelter. This is done to benefit the animals and to ensure that precious resources allocated by local government for animals are used. Click here to read the SPCAs intake policy. Additionally, the SPCA operates a program to reunite lost pets with their owners. The SPCA is an autonomous organization and is not affiliated with or supported by any other SPCAs including the ASPCA. The SPCA is not a government-run organization. The SPCA of Wake County is a private, non-profit organization that serves the pets and people of Wake County community.
