Montgomery County Police Headquarters, a part of the Montgomery County Department of Police, serves the residents of Maryland. The Montgomery County Department of Police evaluates and improves public safety and maintains respect for individual rights and human dignity. It helps to safeguard life and property, as well as preserve peace in the city. The Montgomery County Department of Police also prevents and detects crime, enforces law and protects the rights of citizens. As a life safety agency, it provides fire rescue, and emergency medical services. The agency serves an area of more than 500 square miles. Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service handles over 100,000 emergency calls annually. It maintains a work force of nearly 1,300 employees. The agency maintains a fire code enforcement section and is a part of Montgomery County Government in Maryland, which administers a police department that provides crime prevention services. Montgomery County Government operates finance, transportation and general services departments.

For more than 75 years the Gaithersburg - Washington Grove Volunteer Fire Department has served the communities of Gaithersburg, Washington Grove, Derwood and Montgomery Village. We are a "combined" department. Career firefighters, who are employees of the Montgomery County Fire Rescue Service, make up the backbone of our firefighters, paramedics and emergency medical technicians. Volunteers supplement this staffing, primarily on nights and weekends.Many of our volunteers are are involved as operational firefighters and emergency medical technicians. Others provide administrative and auxiliary services. Many have served for more than 20 years.The GWGVFD operates two stations. Station 8, on Montgomery Village Avenue across from Lakeforest Mall, is the busiest station in Montgomery County. In 2004 Station 8 answered 10, 973 calls. Engine Companies 81 and 82 are quartered at Station 8, along with Tower 8, Medic 89, Ambulances 88, 87 and 86 and Brush 85.Station 28, at the corner of Muncaster Mill and Shady Grove Roads, is home to Engine Company 281 and Ambulance 289. Station 28 is also a "satellite" hazardous materials unit. Station 28 responded to 3, 512 calls in 2004.The GWGVFD is run by a Board of Directors and operational officers who are elected by the membership.

Montgomery County Liquor Control provides wholesale and retail sales of beverage alcohol products while promoting moderation and responsible behavior. Although Maryland is considered a license state, citizens of Montgomery County enjoy the many benefits offered by a control jurisdiction. With emphases on customer service and control, it conducts the wholesale distribution of beverage alcohol, while sharing the retail segment with approximately 870 license-holders, consisting of restaurants, delicatessens, country clubs and lodges, among other establishments. The Department of Liquor Control deposits its profits into Montgomery Countys General Fund to pay for important citizen services such as firefighters, police and teachers, or other services that otherwise would be funded through taxpayer dollars.

The Division of Highway Services is a part of the Montgomery County Department of Transportation located in Gaithersburg, Md. The division is responsible for the maintenance of roadway infrastructure. Its activities include road resurfacing, and curb, gutter and sidewalk repair and replacement. The division also provides roadway tree maintenance services. Its programs include roadway and related maintenance, roadway reforestation and snow removal. In addition, the Division of Highway Services is engaged in the installation of speed humps, vacuum leaf collection and road renewal in conjunction with other county agencies. It removes more than 3,000 tons of dirt, sand and debris form the county roads annually.

The 6th district is housed in a temporary location on the west side of the I-270 while a permanent location is being built. Headed up by Capt. Willie Parker-Loan, the district partrols the Gaithersburg and Montgomery Village area, sharing a jurisdiction with the Gaithersburg City Police. The County Police handle more serious crimes, such as homicide, assault and robbery.
