About Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival The Festivals mission is to provide highly qualified guest artists who offer multidisciplinary study and performance opportunities that increase both personal growth and arts appreciation to all participants. Our philosophy is to enrich the lives of all with whom we associate through study and performances by engaging their spirit, intellect and energy in an empowering way. The Festival gives people who are enthusiastic about the fine arts an outlet to release their passions. We offer classes and workshops at various ability levels, so beginners will find plenty to do. Given the multi-disciplinary nature of our course offerings, a participant with one main area of study has the opportunity to branch out and the explore other arts: a violinist can take ballroom dance before their orchestra rehearsals, or a painter can play in a steel drum band after spending all day in watercolor classes. Think of the Festival as summer camp for adults. You get to make new friends, hone your artistic talents, and just plain have fun. There are concerts nearly every day, so keeping busy is not a problem. The Festival takes place in Fairbanks, which often has beautiful weather at that time of year, so you can enjoy some extremely long days, and maybe take a weekend trip to Denali to see nature at its best. If spending your whole days for two weeks with the Festival is not a possibility due to work or travel commitments, you may be pleased to see the number of evening classes and one-day mini workshops available.

Interior AIDS Association, is the only community-based, nonprofit organization in interior Alaska that focuses solely on HIV related prevention, case management, and other support services. Interior AIDS Association grew out of a recognized need for AIDS education and support services for people with HIV in Fairbanks. In 1987, a friend of many of the founders of the organization fell ill from AIDS. At that time, there were no support services for him or his family. The man died early in 1988, estranged from his family and friends and without adequate emotional, spiritual, or financial support. At this individuals funeral, which was attended by several hundred individuals, the minister said that this person had "gotten what he deserved" and that "his soul was damned for eternity". The family of the deceased was extremely religious, and this statement brought them great anguish and pain. It also angered a great number of the deceaseds friends. In response to these feelings of anger, a public meeting was organized to discuss the formation of a group dedicated to AIDS education and awareness and support for people with HIV. After that meeting, about a dozen volunteers began the process of forming an educational and service organization and preparing the paper work to incorporate. In October 1988, IAA adopted its first by-laws and filed Articles of Incorporation In the years since the IAA was organized, it has grown from a single-phone "hot line" to an agency that offers comprehensive prevention, intervention, and treatment services to a wide variety of individuals and families. From our first Department of Public Health grant for $25, 000, to our most recent 3-year Alaska Housing Finance Corporation housing grant for $500, 000, we have been responsible, accountable, and willing to learn. The IAAs record of providing top quality, cost-effective programs is well documented.
