Established in 1997, The Oakhurst Community Garden of the Wylde Center offers a wide range of classes, programs and special events for individuals, families and youth on such topics as organic gardening, sustainable urban living, nutrition and health. Its popular youth program is one of the metro-area’s largest and offers year-round educational programs. Located between Sugarloaf Parkway and Scenic Highway, Alexander Park is a popular walking spot in the neighborhood. It features almost one-and-a-half miles of walking trails. There is also a horseshoe pit, chess tables and an eighteen-hole disc golf course.
Sims Lake Park is a public park that boasts a seven-acre lake, hiking and walking trails, a playground, a picnic pavilion and restrooms.
This park incorporates environementally friendly and sustainable features, according to the city's Web site and educational signs at the site. A green roof pavilion complete with ground level examples of this sustainable building feature educates visitors on a "green" way to help cool a building. It also controls runoff from a typical impervious surface, the roof of a building. An outdoor classroom is surrounded by examples of native plants suited for the climate and how wetlands help manage an ecosystem. Trails connect the park to the Big Creek Greenway.
Stone Mountain Park is a state authority park and a major tourist attraction. Sitting on 3,200 acres and centered around Stone Mountain, the park offers activities and entertainment year-round, including laser shows, camping, golf, festivals, boat and train rides. An adventure course is also a feature of the park. For those more interested in getting away from the crowds, the park has 15 miles of wooded nature trails.
There is a 10-dollar parking fee, paid when entering the park. A year-long pass costs $35.
A cable car takes visitors to the top of the mountain for a grand view of the Atlanta skyline and the surrounding area. There is a 1.3-mile path to the top for those who are thrill seekers.
The Atlantic is an art deco luxury high-rise in Midtown's Atlantic Station, and is one the largest residential high-rise buildings in the south. The lobby is spacious and modern. The building's amenities include a large pool and hot tub, a catering kitchen, a clubroom with flat-screen TVs and a fitness center. Conveniently located west of Georgia 400 on Keith Bridge Road in Cumming, this park, built in 2001, includes 85 acres of fields, trails and woods. From soccer fields to softball fields, tennis courts to a 27-hole disc golf course, Central Park has something for people of all ages. Additionally, the park features a mountain biking trail, playground, picnic pavilion and walking/running trails. You'll also notice the North Precinct of the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office and the Central Park Recreation Center located within the park.
Traveling East on Browns Bridge Road (GA Highway 369) this park is located just before the Six Mile Creek Bridge on Charleston Park Road. This 154-acre park is one of the newest leased parks from the Army Corps of Engineers, who are responsible for maintaining Lake Lanier. Full development of the park is still being considered with more recreation opportunities in mind. Currently the park provides boat ramps, trailer parking, picnic tables and grills. There is not a public beach at this park.
