St. Stephen was the first Roman Catholic church in town and the first built on upper Main Street, according to Trumbull: Portrait of a Connecticut Town. The church also offers religious education.

It was a mission church of St. Rose's of Newtown, and had a hitching post, the book states. A hurricane destroyed the first building in 1950, and a new one was dedicated in the same year.
