Sarah's Cupboard Thrift Shop is a small thrift store offering collectibles, antiques, used goods and home products. This shop is open six days a week and proceeds go to supporting the Sarah Foundation, a group of activists dedicated to the proposition that people with disabilities deserve equal rights -- and to enjoy life's joys and happinesses.
The Goodwill Career Center offers free services, including workshops, one-on-one assistance and more, for disabled, mentally ill and economically disadvantaged individuals who are applying for employment. Programs include resume writing, references, cover letter writing, interview skills, Internet and e-mail basics, money management and stress management, as well as residential services, supported living services, bilingual services, retail programs and more. Goodwill Industries of Western Connecticut was founded in 1951 by the Rev. Joseph Pouliot. Today the nonprofit organization operates 14 retail stores with donation centers throughout western Connecticut. It also helps people with disabilities, economic disadvantages and other hardships find work by running career centers that offer resume building, interview training and more.
Goodwill, the world-famous charitable organization that operates thrift stores worldwide, has a location on route 1. Their mission, to assist individuals and families in need by "eliminating barriers to opportunity," is subsidized by the stores' revenue, and millions have benefited from vocational and educational training the organization provides. Habitat ReStore is a division of Habitat for Humanity. Materials not used to build Habitat homes are sold here. The ReStore accepts donations of building materials, furniture and appliances.
